Sports massage therapy is a form of deep tissue massage. Its aims are to help relax the muscle, improve flexibility, ease aches and pains and treat sporting injuries. It combines traditional massage strokes, as well as techniques such as soft tissue release, muscle energy techniques and trigger point therapy.
Who can Benefit?
Sports massage therapy is ideal for anyone involved in sporting activities to keep the muscles in tip-top condition and help prevent injuries. Even if you don’t exercise, it is perfect for day-to-day aches and pains. It is also ideal for those who prefer a firmer massage.
For those involved in sports or exercise, sports massage therapy can be used as a regular maintenance tool. Athletes often schedule appointments either weekly, fortnightly, monthly or every 6 weeks. This depends on their own personal requirements.
It is also used to prepare your body for an event such as a race or match. And can be used as a recovery tool, post competition. Ideal timing when booking sports massage in the run-up to an event is 3-5 days prior. For post-event massage 2-4 days is ideal.
We also see lots of clients for sports massage with conditions such as back or neck pain which can really help. In so many cases of back pain the cause of the pain is muscular therefore a good, deep massage or two can really help in one off cases. If this is a persistent problem, consider booking in for an injury assessment to identify and correct the issues which are repeatedly causing your pain.
